This is the technique that makes people say "how did you do that?" Frequency separation splits your photo into two layers: one holding texture (pores, hair, detail) and one holding color & tone (the blotches and shading). Fix each independently and you can even out skin without ever blurring away the pores. It sounds like wizardry; it's really just two sheets.

The right side has blotchy, uneven skin tone. The left has been evened out with frequency separation, and if you look closely, the pores and freckles are still there. That's the difference between retouching and a blur filter. Drag the handle:

Every image is secretly two things layered together:
- Low frequency, the slow, soft stuff: overall color, shading, the blotches and uneven tone. Think of it as the paint.
- High frequency, the fast, fine stuff: pores, fine hairs, crisp edges. Think of it as the texture stamped into the paint.
Frequency separation literally puts these on two different layers. Now blotchy tone lives only on the color sheet, so you can smooth it with a soft brush while the texture sheet keeps every pore perfectly sharp. That's the trick, and it's why the result looks real.

"Frequency," "Apply Image," "Linear Light" sound technical, but you'll set them once and forget them. Ninety percent of this technique is just "paint softly on the color layer." Learn the setup as a recipe; the understanding follows.

Open your retouched portrait from Lesson 3.1 (blemishes already gone; now we even the tone). Flatten a copy to a single layer to start from.
Step 1: Make the LOW (color) layer ยท 6 min
- Duplicate the skin layer twice. Name the lower copy LOW, the upper copy HIGH; hide HIGH for now.
- Select LOW and apply Filter โธ Blur โธ Gaussian Blur. Raise the radius until the blotches are gone and the pores just disappear, often ~6โ12px on a portrait. Remember this radius.
๐ก LOW now holds only color and shading: smooth, no texture. That's your "paint" sheet.
Step 2: Make the HIGH (texture) layer ยท 8 min
- Show and select HIGH. Choose Image โธ Apply Image.
- Set Layer to LOW, and for a 8-bit photo: Blending Subtract, Scale 2, Offset 128. Click OK. HIGH turns flat gray with faint texture.
- Set HIGH's blend mode to Linear Light. The image snaps back to normal, but now texture and color live on separate layers. ๐
โ ๏ธ Match the Apply Image settings to your bit depth
The Subtract / Scale 2 / Offset 128 recipe is for 8-bit images. For 16-bit, use Blending Add, Scale 2, Offset 0, and tick Invert. Wrong recipe = a gray mess; it's the one place beginners trip.
Step 3: Even the tone on LOW ยท 8 min
- Select the LOW layer. Grab the Lasso, loosely circle a blotchy area, and add a tiny Gaussian Blur, or paint with a soft Mixer/normal Brush sampling good nearby color at low opacity.
- Watch the blotches even out while the pores (up on HIGH) stay razor sharp. Work gently; you're evening, not erasing.
Step 4: Fix stray texture on HIGH ยท 5 min
- Select HIGH. Use the Healing Brush or Clone Stamp to remove a rogue flyaway hair or a bit of rough texture, without affecting color at all.
- Save the .psd. Your portrait is smooth and real.

- Frequency-separate a new portrait and even only the forehead and cheeks. Leave everything else.
- Toggle the HIGH layer off to see your pure color sheet, then on again. Understanding beats memorizing.
- Compare against a lazy version: duplicate the original and just run a big Gaussian Blur on the whole face. The plastic result is exactly what frequency separation avoids.
Going further: put your LOW-layer smoothing inside a group with a black mask and paint the smoothing in only where needed. Module 1 masks, riding on top of frequency separation.

For a snapshot, yes: Lesson 3.1's healing is plenty. Reach for frequency separation when skin tone is genuinely uneven (redness, patchiness) and you need it smooth without going plastic.
