The Module 5 finale. You have type and shapes; now you give them polish and pull the whole poster together. Layer styles add shadows, strokes, and gradients as live, re-editable effects, and Smart Objects keep your graphics reusable. Then you assemble and export the finished piece.

🖼️ The Goal: Flat to Finished

🧠 Mental Model: Live Effects

A layer style is a set of effects that live on a layer rather than being painted into it. Add a Drop Shadow and Photoshop keeps drawing it live, following the layer's shape. Change the text, and the shadow updates itself. Recolor the shape, and the stroke follows. Nothing is baked in.

If that sounds familiar, it should. Layer styles are the same non-destructive idea as adjustment layers (Module 2) and Smart Filters (Module 2), applied to effects. You have met this principle in every module, and here it is again, dressing up your type.

🧠 The effects worth knowing

Drop Shadow lifts an element off the page. Stroke outlines it. Gradient Overlay gives flat color richness. Outer Glow and Bevel exist too, but restraint wins: one or two effects usually beats five. Overdone layer styles are the fastest way to make work look dated.

🎛️ The Layer Style Dialog

Double-click a layer (to the right of its name) to open Layer Style. The left column lists effects; tick one to enable it and click its name to see its controls. Here is that dialog as a diagram:

Right-click a layer's fx badge to Copy Layer Style, then Paste Layer Style onto another layer to reuse the exact look instantly.

🛠️ Guided Build: Finish the Poster

Open your poster-working.psd with its type (5.1) and shapes (5.2).

Step 1: Lift the title · 8 min

  1. Double-click the title layer to open Layer Style. Enable Gradient Overlay and pick a two-tone version of your accent color for richness.
  2. Enable Drop Shadow. Keep it subtle: low opacity, small distance, moderate size. The goal is a gentle lift, not a hard black outline.

Step 2: Style the badge and reuse it · 6 min

  1. Give the badge a Stroke and a soft Drop Shadow so it sits above the background.
  2. Right-click its fx and Copy Layer Style, then paste it onto another element to keep the poster consistent. Consistency is what makes a design feel intentional.

⚠️ Restraint beats effects

If a layer has more than two or three effects, ask what each is really doing. A tasteful poster usually uses a gradient and a soft shadow, nothing more. Bevels and heavy glows read as amateur fast.

Step 3: Smart Objects for logos · 6 min

  1. If you have a sponsor logo or a graphic you will reuse, convert it to a Smart Object (Module 2's idea) so you can scale it freely and update every copy at once.
  2. Place a photo (a Module 4 composite, even) as a Smart Object behind the type to give the poster a hero image.

Step 4: Assemble and align · 8 min

  1. Step back and check the whole layout. Use the Move tool with smart guides to align groups. Nudge until margins feel even and the hierarchy still reads at a glance.
  2. Squint at the poster. The title should dominate, the accent should draw the eye to the key action, and nothing should feel crowded against the edges.

🖨️ Export: Print vs Screen

A finished poster is exported differently depending on where it lives. This trips up beginners, so keep it simple:

  1. Keep your layered .psd as the master. Always.
  2. For screen: File ▸ Export ▸ Export As ▸ JPG (or PNG if you need transparency).
  3. For print: File ▸ Save a Copy as PDF, and confirm the color mode and bleed with whoever is printing it. When in doubt, ask the printer for their spec sheet.

🌟 Your challenge

  1. Restyle your poster for a completely different mood: swap the accent color and gradient, and watch the layer styles carry the change everywhere you reused them.
  2. Build a second, matching piece (a square social version) reusing the same styles and Smart Objects. A poster plus a social cut is a real client deliverable.
  3. Deliberately over-style one copy (five effects, heavy bevel) next to your tasteful one. Seeing the difference trains restraint.

❓ Common Questions at This Stage

My drop shadow looks heavy and fake.

Lower the opacity, reduce the distance, and increase the size a little for softness. Real shadows are soft and subtle. If you can clearly "see the shadow" as a separate object, dial it back.

Do layer styles scale with the layer?

Mostly, but if you scale a layer a lot, the effect distances can look off. Right-click the fx and choose Scale Effects to resize them to match, or adjust the values by hand.

Print looks different from my screen. Why?

Screens are RGB and lit; print is CMYK ink on paper and cannot hit every screen color. Design in RGB, soft-proof if you can, and confirm the exact requirements with your printer. Bright neon colors especially shift in print.
