You've used Smart Objects twice already without meeting them properly. This is the Module 2 finale, so let's fix that. Smart Objects are the deepest expression of the idea this whole course is built on โ never destroy your original โ and once you understand them, you'll wrap almost everything in one.

๐ The Goal: Edits That Never Commit
Both sides were scaled way down and then back up. The right side was a normal layer: the pixels were thrown away and it came back mushy. The left was a Smart Object, crisp as the day it started. Drag the handle:
๐ง Mental Model: A Photo Inside a Container
A Smart Object is a sealed container with your original pixels safe inside. When you scale, rotate, warp, or filter it, Photoshop doesn't change the pixels. It writes an instruction on the outside of the box ("display me at 40%," "blur me by 8px") and re-renders from the pristine original each time. Change the instruction and it re-renders again, perfectly. Nothing inside is ever harmed.
That's why Camera Raw became a re-editable Smart Filter in Lesson 2.1: the filter is an instruction on the container, not a change to your pixels.

When a layer is a Smart Object, any filter you apply nests beneath it as a Smart Filter, with its own mask. Here's what your Layers panel looks like (a labeled diagram, not a live screenshot):

Open your Module 2 working file, the one with the Camera Raw develop and Curves layers.
Step 1: Confirm your Smart Object ยท 2 min
- Check the photo layer's thumbnail for the little page-fold badge. If it's missing, right-click โธ Convert to Smart Object now.
- Notice your Camera Raw develop sitting underneath as a Smart Filter.
Step 2: Add a Smart Filter for polish ยท 6 min
- With the Smart Object selected, choose Filter โธ Sharpen โธ Smart Sharpen for crisp detail, or Filter โธ Blur โธ Gaussian Blur for a dreamy glow.
- It appears as a re-editable Smart Filter. Double-click it to change the amount any time.
โ Filter masks: local filtering for free
Click the white Smart Filters mask and paint black where you don't want the filter, e.g. sharpen the eyes but not the skin. It's the black-hides / white-reveals rule from Lesson 1.1, now controlling a filter.
Step 3: Transform without fear ยท 4 min
- Press Ctrl/โ + T and scale the Smart Object down to 30%, commit, then scale it back to 100%.
- It's still crisp: the container re-rendered from the sealed original. (Try that on a normal layer and watch it turn to mush, exactly like the slider up top.)
Step 4: Finish & export the deliverable ยท 6 min
- Do a final look at fit-to-screen. Tweak any Curves or the Camera Raw Smart Filter. Remember, all still live.

- Take any small logo or graphic, convert it to a Smart Object, and scale it up and down a few times. Then do the same to a duplicate that is not a Smart Object. Compare. This is the lesson your eyes will never forget.
- Apply a Gaussian Blur Smart Filter, then paint its filter mask so only the background blurs and your subject stays sharp (a fake shallow-depth-of-field look).
- Double-click your Camera Raw Smart Filter and re-grade: prove to yourself nothing was baked in.

Do Smart Objects make my file huge?
They add some size because they store the original pixels: that's the price of the safety net. For finished delivery you export a flat JPEG anyway; keep the layered .psd as your master.
When should I NOT use a Smart Object?
When you need pixel-level painting or retouching directly on the layer (healing, cloning): those want normal pixels. A common pattern: retouch on normal layers first, then convert to a Smart Object for filtering and transforming.
How do I edit what's actually inside the container?
Double-click the Smart Object thumbnail. It opens the original in its own tab; edit, save, and close, and the change flows back into every place that Smart Object is used.
